The Real Stars of Salsa Music! Online Start Date: Tuesday 6/1/2021 — End Date: Tuesday 6/15/2021 Admission:$25/class; $70 for Series Conga, Bongó and Timbal Behind the artists and celebrities, you’ll find the real stars of Salsa, the Afro-Cuban percussion section: Congas, Bongos and Timbales! In this series of spicy online classes, you will learn about the histories of these percussion instruments, how they shaped the salsa genre, and how they found their way into popular American music and genres around the world. Students will also learn about the artists who made these instruments popular, the racial barriers they had to overcome to do so, and the recognition received for developing the techniques for how these instruments are played throughout the world today. Instructor and Grammy-winning artist, Omar Ledezma, Jr, combines audio and video samples with lecture and live percussion demonstration to create an engaging virtual class environment. In the Shadow of Obscurity; Toiling in a Reluctant Society Start Date: Thursday 6/17/2021 — End Date: Thursday 7/22/2021 Admission:$125/ 6-week series; $225 for two series tickets; A 6-week Online Course on Social Justice and Racism in America as seen through the prism of Professional Sports, taught by Pete Elman with Arif Khatib In the Shadow of Obscurity; Toiling in a Reluctant Society is a six-week Zoom class that is culled from a timely new book of the same title. The book tells the story of the journey, struggles and achievements of a special group of unheralded athletes of color. These brave trailblazers include men and women whose skills and exploits contributed to an array of individual and team sports such as boxing, track and field, golf, diving, auto racing, bicycle racing, judo, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, and baseball, as well as two journalists who championed their causes. The collection of 27 compelling stories includes articles written by a stellar group of authors, scholars, historians, and journalists – some of them local – from the field of sports. With the theme of social justice and racism in America as seen through the prism of professional sports, each week concentrates on one subject/chapter from the book. Instructor, Pete Elman, utilizes a combination of lecture, slide show and interactive discussion focusing on the lives, careers and stories of those who overcame racial prejudice to succeed.
