MEDEA starring Maria Callas Screening in Pasolini 100: Homage to Pier Paolo Pasolini Start Date: Saturday 9/10/2022 — End Date: Saturday 9/10/2022 Admission:General Admission: $15; Seniors, Students and IIC Pier Paolo Pasolini’s acclaimed 1969 film MEDEA screens on September 10 at the Castro Theatre as part of Cinema Italia SF’s Pasolini 100: Homage to Pier Paolo Pasolini. This adaptation of Euripides’s play stars Maria Callas in her only film (a theatrical and non-singing role) as a woman scorned by her husband, Jason of the Argonauts, who avenges herself with fierce abandon. In honor of the centenaries of Maria Callas and the San Francisco Opera, the screening will be preceded by a performance by soprano Mikayla Sager and pianist Andrew King. Music critic Marina Romani will proffer a brief presentation on Maria Callas and the Consul generals of Italy and Greece will speak. This special homage—on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Callas and Pasolini—is presented in collaboration with San Francisco Opera, under the auspices of the Consulate General of Italy. The screening will be followed by a reception, La Roma di Pasolini, in the Castro Theatre Mezzanine, at 8:30 pm, featuring Italian delights and a performance by Peppino d’Agostino, a lauded, classical guitarist based in San Francisco. Five classic films will unspool September 10, the 100th anniversary of Pasolini’s birth, including Pasolini, Abel Ferrara’s biopic of the director, featuring Willem Dafoe; Accattone, Pasolini’s portrait of a hustler; Mamma Roma, starring the explosive Anna Magnani; Medea, featuring opera star Maria Callas; and Salò or the 120 days of Sodom, Pasolini’s controversial anti-fascist masterpiece. New Roots Theatre Festival Start Date: Friday 10/14/2022 — End Date: Sunday 10/16/2022 Admission:$10-40 3 days. 8 projects. 20 performances. The New Roots Theatre Festival is an arts festival that celebrates the development of new work and centers BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ voices. The idea was born in 2020, when SFBATCO Artistic Director Rodney Earl Jackson Jr. read a post in the Bay Area Theatre Facebook group from a local artist who asked, “Where are all the BIPOC organizations?” Jackson and SFBATCO Literary Manager Aidaa Peerzada then set out to design a festival that would unite various arts organizations and provide a platform for experimentation and creative exchange. The 2021 festival did exactly that, as it brought together over 100 theatre workers and 6 organizations all producing under one roof at Brava Theater Center. This year’s festival will feature eight original projects, three of which are produced by SFBATCO and 5 of which are produced by other “Legacy” companies. This year’s collaborating organizations are Crowded Fire Theater Company, the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre, Dimensions Dance Theater, African Arts Academy, and SF Recovery Theatre.
