This adaptation of Euripides’s play stars Maria Callas in her only film (a theatrical and non-singing role) as a woman scorned by her husband, Jason of the Argonauts, who avenges herself with fierce abandon. In honor of the centenaries of Maria Callas and the San Francisco Opera, the screening will be preceded by a performance by soprano Mikayla Sager and pianist Andrew King. Music critic Marina Romani will proffer a brief presentation on Maria Callas and the Consul generals of Italy and Greece will speak. This special homage—on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Callas and Pasolini—is presented in collaboration with San Francisco Opera, under the auspices of the Consulate General of Italy. The screening will be followed by a reception, La Roma di Pasolini, in the Castro Theatre Mezzanine, at 8:30 pm, featuring Italian delights and a performance by Peppino d’Agostino, a lauded, classical guitarist based in San Francisco.
