Age is Just a Number

Age is Just a Number Start Date: Thursday 2/27/2020 — End Date: Thursday 2/27/2020 Admission:$10 advance/$15 day of show Two half hour documentaries by Elizabeth Sher and Maggie Simpson Adams In a celebration of art-making and aging, local filmmakers Elizabeth Sher and Maggie Simpson Adams profile the lives and success of two East Bay inspirations in “Edith and Weezie: Age is Just a Number”. Through these two short documentaries, Sher and Adams provide insight into what is possible when we cast aside life’s hurdles to make room for our futures. Each film is twenty minutes long with Q&A following. Edith Hillinger: Collaging Cultures a film by Elizabeth Sher tells the story of Berkeley artist Hillinger’s life beginning in Berlin, escaping to Turkey with her parents when the Nazis came to power, emigrating to Canada, then to New York City and finally landing in Berkeley, CA. Her artwork in collage is inspired by the Arabic patterns and colors of her childhood. Her lifelong interest in botany, led to work in watercolors where she examines the smallest aspects of petals and leaves to “make the insignificant significant.” Lame since polio struck her as an infant, now in her ninth decade, she continues to live a full life of travel, friends and, of course, always art. Weezie Mott: Still Cookin’ a film by Elizabeth Sher and Alameda resident Maggie Simpson Adams, profiles beloved Alameda hero Weezie Mott. The film covers Weezie’s upbringing in Colorado, to joining the Navy as a nurse in WWII, to living with her naval attaché husband Howard, in Turkey and Italy. Weezie finally landed in “this pretty, pretty island of Alameda” where she founded her cooking school. Now in her 10th decade, she continues to run Weezie Mott’s Cooking School from her home. Weezie Mott: Still Cookin’ is the third collaboration between Sher and Simpson Adams. Chelle! & Friends Mardi Gras Party

Chelle! & Friends Mardi Gras Party Start Date: Saturday 2/22/2020 — End Date: Saturday 2/22/2020 Admission:$22 advance/ $27 day of show Ask 20 people how to define the music of New Orleans and you’ll get 30 different answers. It could be jazz, funk, soul, Creole, Cajun, or gospel, Caribbean, African, Zydeco, rock or the chants and stirring rhythms of Mardi Gras Indians. Combining these elements and more, CHELLE & Friends delivers a stewpot of musical gumbo that is sweet, spicy, aromatic and definitely intoxicating. CHELLE! and Friends is made up of some of the most distinguished and accomplished musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their vibrant music comes alive with the driving voices of artistic director, founder, New Orleans native, and Oakland’s own “Queen of New Orleans Music,” Michelle Jacques, Rhonda Crane, Jay Lamont and Bryan Dyer, with Donna Viscuso on woodwinds, Eric Swinerman on guitar, Kevin Scott on bass and Michaelle Goerlitz on drums. Although the repertoire includes gospel, folk, blues, and pop songs from around the country, New Orleans music in its many varieties – jazz, R&B, swamp pop, and Mardi Gras Indian music, among them – has been the group’s focus since its inception in early 2005. Preserving those sounds became an even more urgent mission after Hurricane Katrina stuck the Crescent City later that year. This musically rich performance transcends ethnic boundaries, uplifts, brings news, protests, motivates and honors our richness and diversity. “Whether leading a children’s Mardi Gras parade or headlining the ‘Queens of New Orleans” Music Festival, CHELLE! & Friends’ blend of music delights audiences of all ages.” Linda Lucero, Executive/Artistic Director-Yerba Buena Gardens Festival “Chelle has put together a dream team of accomplished performers. This group completely rocks!” Russ Jennings, Common Soul Productions Doors open at 6:30pm with a New Orleans style dinner from Café Jolie. Day of Remembrance for Alameda’s Japantown

Day of Remembrance for Alameda’s Japantown Start Date: Wednesday 2/19/2020 — End Date: Wednesday 2/19/2020 Admission:free Rhythmix Cultural Works honors the memory of Alameda’s lost Japantown with a commemorative celebration of the Day of Remembrance. The annual Day of Remembrance, February 19, 1942, commemorates the signing of Executive Order 9066, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which led to the forced removal and incarceration of 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry living on the West Coast, who had to abandon their jobs, their homes, and lives, to be sent to one of ten internment camps scattered in desolate, remote regions of the country. No Japanese Americans were ever charged, much less convicted, of espionage or sabotage against the United States. Yet they were targeted, rounded up, and imprisoned for years, simply for having the “face of the enemy.” Executive Order 9066 is responsible for the disappearance of a once thriving Alameda Japantown. The words and stories of the Japanese in Alameda remind us of an extreme act of racial targeting that took place only 78 years ago. 6-9:00 K Gallery opening of “the writing is on the wall” ‘The writing is on the wall’ is an indication of imminent danger. K Gallery’s exhibit includes: Japanese calligraphy and carbon copies of typewritten letters from WWII internment camps, artist Najib Joe Hakim’s photographs of Palestinian and Lebanese walls and Salma Arastu’s paintings that are inspired by the scripture of the Quran. 7:00-7:30 In the Rhythmix Theater Maze Daiko and Kallan Nishimoto perform: Heart of the Mountain with Poems Excerpts from the documentary Honoring Alameda’s Japanese Americans introduced by Reverend Michael Yoshii of Buena Vista United Methodist Church, Alameda.
