EL SURREALISMO EN MÉXICO: HISTORIES, REFLECTIONS, ENGAGEMENTS Start Date: Sunday 11/17/2019 — End Date: Sunday 11/17/2019 Admission:0.00 El Surrealismo en México: Histories, Reflections, Engagements Sunday, November 17, 2019 5:00 PM 6:30 PM San Francisco Art Institute, 800 Chestnut Street, San Francisco (Admission Free) A lecture with Dr. Arturo Dávila-Sánchez. Mexico contributed richly to the archives of Surrealism. Although Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera take a great deal of the spotlight, there were many other artists who contributed to the moment in Mexican art, culture, and politics in which surrealist currents played a vital role (not least, David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco). Meanwhile, influential Mexican writers like Octavio Paz, José Revueltas, Elena Garro, Juan Rulfo, and many others noted surrealism’s influence on their own contributions to what became known as magical realism (a development they also traced back as far as the incomparable poetry of Sor Juana). We can even found the traces of Surrealism in contemporary Chaicanx art and writing and in Neobaroque poetry. Throughout the course of the last century, such influential figures as Leonora Carrington, André Breton, Luis Buñuel, Remedios Varo, and many others either passed through or made their home in Mexico City. In this afternoon’s lecture, Professor Dávila-Sánchez will explore the rich history of Mexican Surrealism and read some contemporary texts influenced by surrealism. Arturo Dávila-Sánchez is a poet, translator, writer, and educator. He is Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Professor of Spanish and Mexican-Latin American Studies at Laney College, Oakland. He is poet laureate in Mexico and Spain where he was awarded three international prizes for the following collections: La ciudad dormida (National Prize “Sor Juana In?s de la Cruz,” Mexico, 1995); Catulinarias (International Prize “Antonio Machado,” Baeza, Spain, 1998); and, Poemas para ser leíos en el Metro (International Prize “Juan Ramón Jim?nez,” Huelva, Spain, 2003). He has recently published for the Mexican magazine nexos & El Cultural. Photo Caption Arturo Dávila-Sánchez courtesy of City Lights. Diebenkorn Teaching Fellow: Delia Brown
Diebenkorn Teaching Fellow: Delia Brown Start Date: Thursday 10/17/2019 — End Date: Thursday 10/17/2019 Admission:0.00 Diebenkorn Teaching Fellow: Delia Brown Oct 17th | 7–9pm—Osher Lecture Hall Delia Brown is a painter exploring how high-tech culture encourages and facilitates a preoccupation with our own image, and shines a light on the flattening of our relationship to the larger world we inhabit. In the early 2000s she became known for a naturalistic style of representational painting that combined sharp social critique with humor and highly personal introspection. Her work over the last two years has seen a move towards an abstracted figuration, focusing on how our relationship to technology (specifically: smartphones) amplifies our narcissistic and myopic tendencies, engendering a troubling disengagement from the world around us. Brown has held numerous solo exhibitions in the US and abroad, and is represented in museum collections including Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Brown received her BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1992 and her MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2000. Brown will teach two courses during the fall 2019 semester, give a public lecture in the Visiting Artists and Scholars lecture series, and engage with the SFAI community through individual student critiques and other academic activities.
