The evening begins with ‘Becoming James,’ directed by Evan Possley. The eight-minute documentary follows a man who, after decades in prison, works to rebuild his identity and finds success in an unexpected way. Next is ‘Shuffle,’ directed by Benjamin Flaherty. Through the filmmaker’s own recovery, the documentary investigates the multibillion-dollar addiction treatment industry, examining financial incentives, conflicts of interest and the system surrounding people seeking treatment. The evening concludes with ‘Nuns vs. The Vatican,’ directed by Lorena Luciano and produced by Filippo Piscopo. The film follows a former Catholic nun who breaks her silence about abuse within the Church, as other nuns come forward to examine a culture of silence and institutional protection. United Nations Association Film Festival | Closing Night Start Date: Saturday 10/24/2026 — End Date: Saturday 10/24/2026 Admission:$19-60 The 29th United Nations Association Film Festival closes on Sunday, Oct. 25, at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto, bringing two feature-length films. Yo (Love is a Rebellious Bird), by Bay Area duo Banker White and UNAFF alum Anna Fitch, is an imaginative film explores creativity as an outlet for grief and love. In the Company of Wolves: An American Journey, narrated by Jeff Bridges and directed by Susan Kucera and Jim Swift, explores how our relationship with animals shaped a nation. United Nations Association Film Festival | Free Shorts Program Start Date: Saturday 10/17/2026 — End Date: Saturday 10/17/2026 Admission:Free The 29th United Nations Association Film Festival presents a free shorts program on Sunday, Oct. 18, in Palo Alto, featuring three documentaries that explore wildlife conservation, wrongful incarceration, and the global impact of cryptocurrency. The program opens with ‘Crossing the Divide,’ directed and produced by local filmmaker Talia Frank. The 11-minute documentary examines how roads fragment wildlife habitats and explores the potential of wildlife crossings to restore animal movement and strengthen ecosystems. Next is ‘The Dreaming Game,’ directed and produced by Jordan Salvatoriello. The film follows 70-year-old Raymond Gaines, a Boston native and lifelong baseball fan, as he returns to Fenway Park after spending 47 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. As he awaits a decision on his case, Gaines works to rebuild his life and pursue his long-sought freedom. The program concludes with ‘The Market and the Monkey’s Paw,’ directed and produced by ‘Graham New, Leo Safir, and Oliver Richards. Set in El Salvador, the documentary explores the country’s adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender through the perspectives of market vendors, educators and community members, examining questions of economic inclusion, tourism, gentrification and digital finance. **Admission is free.** The special program from UNAFF offers an opportunity to see three short documentaries and discover the work of filmmakers from the Bay Area and beyond. United Nations Association Film Festival | Opening Night Start Date: Wednesday 10/14/2026 — End Date: Wednesday 10/14/2026 Admission:$19-60 The 29th United Nations Association Film Festival opens Thursday, Oct. 15, at Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto, with remarks by Mayor Vickie Veenker and the presentation of a City of Palo Alto proclamation recognizing the 29th UNAFF. Opening Night begins with the West Coast premiere of The Comfort Dogs of Uganda, directed by Australian filmmaker Richard Wainwright. The documentary follows former child soldiers in northern Uganda finding unexpected bonds with rescued village dogs. Next is the world premiere of Last Christian in Bethlehem, from local Bay Area team and UNAFF alums, Robert Levering, Stephen Talbot, and Stephanie Mechura. This feature documentary provides interviews and footage of Palestinian Christians living in the West Bank. The night concludes with Through the Body, a film about Keith Terry, an Oakland percussionist and dancer. Director Andrew Reissiger journeys with Terry as he builds a global community through the International Body Music Festival. A special dance performance will also take place at this screening.
